Tomato Chutney


Chutney is a term for a class of spicy preparations used as an accompaniment for a main dish (like dosa, idly, chapatti etc...). Chutneys usually contain an idiosyncratic but complementary spice and vegetable mix.

Ingredients:

  1. Tomato - 4 (chopped)
  2. Big onion - 1 (chopped)
  3. Oil - 2 table spoon
  4. Mustard seed - 1/2 tea spoon
  5. Urad dal - 1/2 table spoon
  6. Red chilli - 3
  7. Curry leaf - 10 leaves
  8. Salt to taste

Preparation:
  1. Heat the oil in the frying pan.
  2. Fry urad dal in the oil till it becomes golden brown. Take from oil and keep it aside.
  3. Sauté (fry) Onion in the oil till it becomes golden brown and add tomatoes to it and sauté it till it becomes soft and can be mashed.
  4. Add red chilli to it and sauté till it becomes dark red and big in size.
  5. Grind the fried item along with the urad dal, salt to make a paste without adding water.
  6. Heat oil and fry the mustard seed till it splutters out. Now add curry leaf to it and fry it.
  7. Add the curry leaf and mustard seed to the grinded paste and this adds flavor to the chutney.
